At Manzer, we see the effects of cold winter weather on hair all year long. Toronto winds and chill can cause some major damage that reveals itself even more once the spring humidity hits. In this guide, we will offer you everything you need to know about taking care of your hair the same way you do your skin.
Winter weather can wreak havoc on our hair. Many of us notice extra dryness, brittleness and increased frizz. The cold air outside combined with indoor heating systems can strip our hair of its natural oils, leaving it parched and prone to breakage. Hydrating your hair is key. With the right products and care you can maintain its health, shine, and manageability during the colder months, just like we prioritize moisturizing our skin to combat dryness and signs of aging.
Invest in high-quality, hydrating hair care products specifically formulated to replenish moisture and nourish your locks. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and shea butter, which are known for their hydrating properties.
TRY:
Treat your hair to regular deep conditioning treatments to restore moisture and repair damage caused by winter weather. Opt for hydrating masks or treatments rich in vitamins and antioxidants to rejuvenate your strands from root to tip.
TRY:
Minimize the use of heat-styling tools like blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands, as they can further dehydrate your hair and contribute to frizz and breakage. Instead, embrace air-drying or use heat-protectant products before styling.
Consider wearing protective hairstyles like braids, buns, or twists to shield your hair from harsh winter elements and reduce moisture loss. These styles also help to minimize tangles and breakage, promoting healthier hair growth.
Treat your hair to the ultimate hydration experience with the Hydrate Me Kits by Kevin Murphy. These affordable and all-inclusive kits are made up of the Hydrate wash and rinse to cleanse and moisturize, along with a free styling product to perfect your look.
You can also buy products from the collection individually. Elevate your hydration game with Kevin Murphy's Hydrate Me wash and rinse, Untangled leave-in conditioner, and Hydrate Me mask. These luxurious products infuse your hair with moisture, leaving it soft, smooth, and radiant.
Dive into moisture-rich formulas with AG's hydrating line, featuring the Xtra Moist and Ultra Moist shampoos and conditioners, along with the Fast Food leave-in conditioner and Nourish mask to nourish and revitalize your hair.
Don't let winter weather dull your sparkle. Nourish yourself head to toe with the hydration your entire body deserves. At Manzer Hair Salon, our team of expert stylists is dedicated to helping you achieve healthy, moisturized locks that shine all season long. Visit our Toronto salon to discover the transformative power of hydrating hair products and unlock your hair's full potential.

But before you pop into Manzer Hair Studio for a drastic change, let's talk about the best steps for a successful new ’do.
The first step? Make an appointment, if only for a quick consult before the big chop. This is your opportunity to discuss your ideas, get professional advice, and assess whether your dream hairstyle is a good fit for your hair type and lifestyle. Having a consultation means that you will have a chance to consider all of the insight your stylist offers before diving in head first.
The secret to great hair starts with understanding your hair type. Is it poker-straight, elegantly wavy, beautifully curly, or a blend of textures? Before you choose a final look, considering your hair type is the key to ensuring that your style not only looks fabulous but is also a breeze to maintain. You want to enhance the best features of your unique hair rather than battle its natural texture. One of our skilled stylists at Manzer Hair Studio will help you explore the possibilities and embark on a hair transformation journey tailored to your needs.

Impulse decisions can sometimes lead to regret, especially when it comes to hair transformations. Take the time to mull over your decision. Your initial consultation at Manzer will provide you with ample options and best practices. Once you have seen your stylist, give it a few days, or even a week before committing. If you're contemplating a drastic change, like a significant cut or a bold colour shift, consider making the change gradually. Start with small steps, like experimenting with highlights or a slightly different length. This way, you can ease into the change and ensure it aligns with your vision.
One of the beautiful things about hair is its ability to grow back. If you're itching for a drastic transformation, remember that it's not a permanent decision. Hair is adaptable, and you have the freedom to experiment. However, this doesn't mean you should make impulsive decisions—the key is finding a balance between spontaneity and thoughtful planning.
Whether you're opting for a subtle change or a bold transformation, we are here to support you and your new look for the New Year. As 2024 approaches, take a moment to envision the hairstyle that reflects the new you. Book that consultation, understand your hair type, and take the plunge with confidence.

Your scalp is akin to the soil from which healthy plants grow. Like soil quality is vital for vibrant plants, caring for your scalp is crucial for flourishing hair. From hydration to oil, irritants and dandruff, this is your guide to a healthy, radiant scalp.
Hydration and Circulation: Keeping your scalp adequately hydrated is pivotal for vibrant hair. Maintaining healthy blood circulation also ensures that your hair follicles receive the essential nutrients they need, fostering strong and beautiful hair.
Oil Balance: Your scalp's natural oils play a pivotal role in maintaining hair moisture. Striking the right balance is critical; excessive oiliness can lead to limp hair, while insufficient oil can cause dryness and irritation.
Freedom from Irritation: A healthy scalp is free of inflammation, itchiness, and discomfort. Such irritations not only impact comfort but can also hinder hair growth.
Bid Farewell to Scalp Woes
The fundamentals of a healthy scalp are only the beginning. Addressing the telltale signs of an unhealthy scalp is the next step to understanding how to revive your hair, and refresh your scalp.
Dandruff Dilemma: Those white flakes that surface on your shoulders? They're often indicators of an imbalanced scalp. The causes can range from dehydrated skin to a proliferation of fungi.
Greasy Predicament: If your hair gets oily soon after washing, you might be dealing with overactive oil production. Hormonal shifts and excessive washing can contribute to this.
Hair Loss Puzzles: Hair loss can stem from multiple factors. These include inadequate nutrient intake, poor circulation, genetics, and stress.

Eco-friendly
North American salons generate 421,206 lbs every day! That’s 210 tonnes! This includes hair clippings, hair colour, foil, hair colour tubes, waste paper and plastic bottles. That’s not a statistic we wanted to contribute to, so we made some major changes.
Green Circle certified salon
We joined the Green Circle movement. Green Circle is a salon recycling program that takes waste like hair clippings, foil and more and ensures that they are recycled or reclaimed in the most sustainable and environmentally-responsible way. Hair clippings may become recycling bins—seriously!—foil could be turned into bicycles and excess hair colour could become fuel. It’s an incredible program and we are proud to be a part of it.
Water Conservation
We use eco-friendly shower heads that reduce water and energy consumption by up to 65%.
The BEST scalp massages
And don’t worry. Although we’re saving water, the shampoo experience is still therapeutic. Every one of our stylists, including apprentices receive scalp massage training. We give the best scalp massages!
PETA-approved
At Manzer, we only use and sell PETA-approved products hair products. Kevin.Murphy and AG Hair (whats in the bottle) are not only not tested on animals, but they’re paraben-free and concentrated so you get more for your money.
Established in 2008
Manzer has been around for 15 years and salon owner Nicole has been styling hair for over 23 years! Her experience and passion for hair mean that all the stylists on the Manzer team are well-trained, compassionate and great at what they do.

How often should you GLOSS?
It is super important to consider your hair type and condition when deciding how often to gloss your hair. If your hair is damaged or prone to breakage, it is best to limit the frequency of hair gloss treatments. We generally recommend treatments every 4-6 weeks, but your stylist will determine the best course of action for your unique hair type and colour.
What Are The Best Salon Gloss Products?
Kevin Murphy's color.me.gloss, the preferred product at Manzer Salon, is a hair gloss treatment that offers a range of benefits for those looking to enhance the appearance and health of their hair. ]]>So, what exactly is a shag haircut? Essentially, a shag haircut is a layered haircut that features choppy, textured layers giving the hair a tousled, carefree look. The best part is that it is versatile and can be customized to suit various hair types and face shapes.
Face Shape
In terms of face shape, the shag haircut can work well for literally anyone. If you have a round face, a shag haircut can help to elongate your face and create a more angular look. If you have a square or angular face, a shag haircut can soften your features.
Hair Type
All hair types work with a shag. Your stylist should be able to achieve a cute shag haircut that specifically suits the thickness and body of your unique hair:
Thin Hair: A shag haircut for those with thin hair involves plenty of light layers. These layers allow for more volume and the flexibility to add bangs, face-shaping curtain bangs or a Miley Cyrus-inspired mullet.
Thick Hair: Those with super thick hair often want to rid themselves of extra bulk and weight. A shag haircut offers the chance to cut out tons of excess hair and provide you with a layered look that won’t weigh you down.
Curly Hair: Curly locks are equally suited to shag haircuts as stylists cut with the curls, opting for a shag look with springy multi-layered curls.
Short Hair: Even short hair can be cut into a cute shag. Jenna Ortega’s look at the 2023 SAG awards was the perfect example of a pixie-like cut that could easily be mimicked in a shorter or longer style.
Products
Finding the products to suit your individual shag look and hair texture is important. The shag is all about a bouncy, tousled feel. Products that are lightweight, de-frizzing and hydrating are key to the health and beauty of your look. We love…

Try AG’s Dynamics Extra Firm Finishing Spray to maintain your incredible style all night long: Ultradynamic
While these are some of the best prom hairstyles, it's important to remember that not all hairstyles work for everyone. That's why it's important to consult with a professional stylist before the big day.
A stylist can help you choose a hairstyle that complements your face shape, hair texture, and overall style. They can also help you choose the right accessories, such as hair clips, headbands, and tiaras, to complete your look.
In addition, a stylist can help you prepare your hair for the big day by recommending hair care products and treatments that will keep your hair healthy and shiny. They can also provide tips on how to maintain your hairstyle throughout the night, so you can dance the night away without worrying about your hair falling out of place.
The liquid hair trend is all about achieving a shiny, almost reflective finish that's reminiscent of wet-look hair but less weighed down. Unlike traditional wet-look styles, which can leave hair looking greasy or weighed down, liquid hair treatments and products are formulated to give hair a weightless, bouncy feel.
At the salon, ask for a gloss treatment. This can come with demi-permanent dye deepening your hair colour and adding intense shine. A gloss treatment can also be clear and simply adds a glossy finish. Or, try our Kevin Murphy Treat.Me treatment. This salon-exclusive option detoxifies the hair then delivers deep conditioning for stronger, shinier locks. It’s a great choice for those who want the liquid look but are dealing with damage and dryness.
To keep that glossy look, try these products. As with all beauty brands, not all liquid hair products are created equal. Luckily the products we carry are as gentle on your hair and health as they are on the environment:
Kevin Murphy Shimmer Me Blonde
The best leave-ins:
Fast Food Leave-in Conditioner
AG Conditioning Mist Detangling Spray
Revlon Equave Leave-In
The best oils:
Now that you have the products in hand, the application is key. The liquid hair trend works for all hair types, from fine and straight to thick and curly.
To achieve the liquid hair look, start by applying a small amount of your chosen liquid hair product, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to distribute the product evenly throughout your hair.
Once you've applied the product, you can style your hair. The liquid hair trend works well with a variety of styles. While the original trend started with stick-straight styles on celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, we love shiny curls and waves, too. Whatever style you choose, the key is to keep your hair looking glossy and reflective.
Whether you opt for a lightweight oil like Kevin Muphy Young Again or a leave-in conditioner like Fast Food Leave-in Conditioner these liquid hair products can help to smooth down the hair cuticle and reflect light, giving you a weightless, bouncy feel. So, if you're looking for a new way to amp up your hair game, give the liquid hair trend a try and let us know how it works for you.
Face shape
The short bob works well for many face shapes, but some shapes are better suited than others. If you have an oval face, you're in luck! The short bob will look great on you, accenting your cheekbones and shaping your face. If you have a round face, a bob with some layers and volume at the crown will help to elongate your face. And for those with a square face, a bob with side-swept bangs can help to soften the angles of your face. If you’re not sure a bob will suit you, chat with your stylist. Most cuts can be customized to fit your face shape.
Hair type
Your hair type is probably the biggest determining factor when it comes to a short bob. If you have thick, curly or wavy hair, you are going to need to be fully prepared for extra bounce and volume. Some people adore the added curls and are happy to style accordingly but when summer and excess humidity roll around, being ready with the right products is a necessity.
Those with especially fine hair need some extra layering to help them achieve a short bob that doesn’t make their hair look even thinner. Adding some layers to give your hair more volume will help to create a fuller effect for those without ample volume.
Lifestyle
Depending on your hair type, a short bob can require a bit more maintenance. High buns are suddenly out the window and regular trims become a part of your monthly routine. If you already style your hair regularly, the lack of length can easily cut your morning prep routine in half. But if you are accustomed to an easy pony or the ease of curls being weighed down by lengthy hair, you may want to reconsider a short bob.
Style
Depending on the style you are looking for, you’ll need a cut to match. A short bob can be messy and edgy, sleek and straight, layered and voluminous. Talking to your stylist about the ways that you would like to be able to do your hair is key to achieving the short bob you've been dreaming of.
Products
Depending on your current style, you may need a total product overhaul. Short bobs require much lighter styling products and, often less definition than a longer look.
For more volume:
Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity
Kevin Murphy Body Builder Mousse
For tighter curls:
Kevin Murphy Killer Curls
Now that you know all that you need to know about getting a bob that works for you and your busy lifestyle, our stylists are ready for you. As we come into the spring and summer months it is an especially fun and stylish haircut. Visit us to find out more about how to make your hairstyle dreams come true.
Try different dye techniques
Balayage, ombre or baby lights should be chosen over standard highlights or a full head of blonde hair. It might take a longer initial commitment, but these styles of colouring will grow out with a more natural look. Babylights are fairly new. It is a way to create baby-fine highlights similar to sun-touched hair that creates a glossy, glowing effect. Balayage has a long lifespan because the roots appear gradually. Regardless of which you choose though, an initial investment of time is necessary to get the full effect.
Go halfsies
Running low on time and the capacity to commit to extended time in the salon chair? Try half-head instead of full-head babylights or balayage. This cuts your time in the chair in half and still provides the lightening effect around your face. A talented colorist will have no trouble blending your hair to make sure it looks gorgeous both down and pulled back.
Get toned
Regular toning treatments can help keep the brass at bay and maintain your colour. They can help with natural highlights or help brighten your dyed locks.
Hold back on hair washing
You heard that right. Shampoos strip natural oils from your hair and can increase the damage brought on by bleach and the toning process. It’s best to stick with washing your hair just two or three times per week. When you do wash your hair, stick to colour-friendly options like AG Colour Savour Shampoo or KM Everlasting Colour Wash
Keep your hair hydrated
Adding the right kind of moisture to your hair will help it retain its natural bounce and shine. We recommend using products intended for colour-treated hair and a hydrating hair mask once a week. Try AG Sterling Silver Mask or Kevin Murphy Blond Angel Treatment.
Protect and replenish
Colour-safe shampoos and conditioners tend to have fewer sulphates and silicones. They also often have natural ingredients to help protect and boost the health of your hair. We carry AG Hair and Kevin Murphy products because of their commitment to natural, earth-friendly and human-friendly ingredients. Some of our favourites include Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash and AG Sterling Silver Conditioner.
Avoid heat and other harsh conditions
While you can use a protective spray while straightening or curling your hair, it’s best to avoid hot tools. Look into alternative methods for drying, curling, and styling your hair. AG Firewall Spray is a great product to use prior to a hot tool to protect your hair from the heat, alternatively KM Heated Defence is best prior to a blowdry.
The truth is, achieving lighter hair in a way that offers minimal time commitment isn’t easy. But by following these tried and true methods you might discover that you can have marginally blonder hair and a much brighter look. If you are searching for advice to help you perfect your sun-kissed look, contact us for your next appointment.
]]>A known carcinogen, Benzene, was discovered in 70 per cent of the dry shampoos tested in a recent independent lab study in the United States. The amount of this cancer-causing substance varied from brand to brand, but some samples of air contaminated with sprayed dry shampoo contained 170 times the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved limit. Regular exposure to benzene is associated with leukemia and other cancers. Even short-term exposure is known to cause headache, nausea and drowsiness, among other unpleasant symptoms.
Needless to say, finding a dry shampoo that is functional and healthy should be at the top of your priority list. Not all hair care and beauty products are created equal. At Manzer, we focus on purchasing and selling only high-quality, environmentally sustainable and non-toxic products. This includes dry shampoo that can have you going from greasy to gorgeous in no time.
The Best Brands
Kevin Murphy and AG Hair are brands that care about their consumers and the planet. Their dry shampoos are made with safe ingredients, and they really work. We love these volume-boosting and non-toxic products.

How to Apply
The last thing you want is a visible powder finish. Dry shampoo doesn’t go on like hair spray. There’s a technique to it.
Step 1. Shake the Can to mix the product with the propellant.
Step 2. Separate your hair into sections, parting your hair in a few places on the top of your head.
Step 3. Spray in small, gentle spritzes rather than one consistent spray. Spritz multiple times across each part.
Step 4. Wait for the products to settle for a few minutes.
Step 5. Use a dry towel or a brush to remove the product from the hair by rubbing the part or brushing the hair to pull the oil out of the hair.
Watch our video for a detailed explanation of how to use these professional-grade, non-toxic dry shampoos.
If you feel like your ends are needing a pick me up as well. Why not try our Young Again Dry Conditioner as it offers a dry oil in a spray, helping to condition and re-hydrate, so hair feels softer, cleaner and healthier, all without the need for washing. Whether you need it post exercise, due to lack of time, or need a quick freshen up, this dry conditioner is a must-have in your hair care routine.
TikTok is chock-full of exciting hair styling ideas to achieve a perfect curl or beach wave. Some ideas are more trouble than they are worth, and others are downright dangerous like the pop can curls here. Luckily, a few are fun, innovative ways to achieve stunning results. When it comes to curling your hair without using a curling iron, a few winning methods can help you get the bounce and tendrils you are craving.
Braids
TikTok user @dudushair shows off how gorgeous braided hair can look once the plaits have been released. This method is super straightforward. Put your hair in two French braids, sleep and boom, tight waves that look perfectly tousled. This works best on thick hair that is shoulder-length or longer.
Socks
This may seem unconventional, but sock curls are a relatively easy, heat-free method to achieve big, beachy curls overnight. TikTok user @victorialouie shows off exactly how she achieves this must-have look.
Part your hair in the middle. Place a long tube sock, toe up, at the root of your hair on one side of the part. Tightly wind a large, two-inch piece of hair around the top of the sock. Working your way down, wrap the strand around the sock, adding more and more hair as you go. Eventually, all of your hair on one side should be wound around the sock. Once finished, curl the ankle of the sock upwards, protecting the hair within it. Add a scrunch to keep it in place overnight. Do the same on the other side. Sleep and enjoy! This look can also be achieved using the belt from your fave terry cloth bathrobe.
Rags
Similar to the sock curls, this concept is slightly more time-consuming but offers super tight curls without using a curling iron. @zandi_makeup_artist shows off her rag curl skills. Allegedly stemming from the Victorian era, this popular method for curling iron-free curls gives you serious ringlets whether using a hair dryer or leaving the look overnight.
Take a small section of your hair and, using a small piece of fabric or an old stocking, tightly wrap the section around the cloth until you reach the root. Tie off the cloth and continue the process over your entire head.
Flat Iron
We love waves and curls made with a flat iron. Learn how to get this look with our tutorial.
We know that TikTok is hit or miss when it comes to beauty tutorials but these four methods for curls actually work for anything from tight curls to beach waves without a curling iron.

If you aren’t caring for your scalp, you are missing a vital hair care step. The root of your hair woes can often be found on the scalp. Too oily, too dry, flaky, clogged or irritated, treating your unique scalp needs can be a game changer for the health of your hair.
Just like a plant’s need for healthy soil, the health of your hair relies on a healthy foundation which means ensuring that the entire body is nourished. We know that vitamin D3, iron, zinc, folate and ferritin contribute to a healthy body and help with scalp health.
Brushing your hair also helps to nourish the scalp by stimulating blood flow and distributing oils appropriately through the hair and across the scalp. Using a natural boar brush removes the buildup of products, oils and dead skin cells and improves circulation.
There also happen to be some key products that can help you to achieve a gorgeous scalp and, therefore, more lustrous hair. Treatments, scrubs, serums and washes are all available for you and your head to enjoy.
Scalp treatments are usually leave-on, nourishing masks for your scalp. They help to calm, condition and offer a more balanced pH while removing impurities. Scalp Spa Treatment by Kevin.Murphy is luxurious and specifically designed to relieve sensitive scalp.
Just like body scrubs, scalp scrubs are incredible for exfoliating, and removing built-up dirt, oil or products. Once all the nasties are scrubbed away, the glands on your scalp are free to produce the right amount of oil for healthier hair. The gentle exfoliation and dual purpose (think scalp and body) of Scalp Spa Scrub by Kevin.Murphy make it the perfect addition to your hair care rituals.
Serums are concentrated oil-based treatments to offer super absorbent, balancing moisture for your scalp. One of the big benefits is that these can easily be used only on the areas of the scalp that most need it. We love the silky texture and calming properties of Scalp Spa Serum by Kevin.Murphy.
Washing your scalp means deeply cleansing the skin under your hair to rid yourself of built-up residue, oil, dirt and hair products. Scalp washes remove dandruff and soothe the skin to ensure it doesn’t return. Used effectively as a treatment and preventative measure, scalp washes provide moisture and calming ingredients to cleanse the scalp and keep flaking at bay. The rose water, coconut oil and celery seed extract make Scalp Spa Wash by Kevin.Murphy unique.
AG Control Shampoo
Control shampoo by AG is a dandruff shampoo that feels luxurious. It’s formulated with the maximum active ingredient allowable without a prescription. It leaves hair healthy and moisturized while effectively eliminating dry, itchy scalp. pH 5.0 to 6.5.
AG Remedy Leave On Mist
Remedy Apple cider leave on mist has a foundation of Apple Cider viniger which has anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties. It can help reduce itching caused by dry skin. Remedy leave on mist detangles, reduces frizz, adds shine and balances the pH of the hair. Remedy leaves hair feeling noticeably smoother, while helping to restore strength, elasticity and lock in moisture. Ideal for all hair types, perfect for colour-treated hair.
This leave-on product delivers great hair—volume, fullness and softness—by treating the scalp with soothing ingredients.
Even if you don’t experience what you would consider scalp problems, you might be surprised to see how much healthier your hair becomes after spending time devoted to scalp health. Caring for yourself head to toe and using scalp treatments can prevent nasty build-up and reveal more nourished hair.
Embrace the process fully by dying your entire head a light, grey-toned colour that allows the grow-out process to very rapidly become the real deal. It means not waiting out a long, up to two-year process and instead entirely accepting the grey by using a tone that suits your natural hair.
Tints are temporary hair dyes that allow you to gently avoid a harsh grow-out line. They range in colours and shades and can allow you to achieve a balayage look with your natural grey roots slowly revealing themselves.
Lowlights and highlights can offer a dynamic look while you grow out your grey. By matching your silver hues and carefully selecting colours that blend into your existing dyed hair, a stylist can slowly and stylishly create a tonal look that is as fashionable as the final product.
Products like Kera’s Colour Fling is a fun way to go grey for a day. Try this pomade by applying it throughout your hair, blow dry and wash it out after one day’s use.
BONUS: Rock those curls
Curly hair tends to disguise the demarcation lines of a grow-out more effectively, so no matter how you choose to grow your greys, wearing your hair with a curl or wave will most definitely help to ensure a more subtle experience.
Once you are on your way to grey, these silver-loving products will help you to avoid brassy, yellow tones and maintain the vibrant grey hair you are seeking:

There are a few ways to manage your post-summer hair and we are here to talk about the three best methods for a healthier, more lustrous style this autumn.
Clarify
Clarifying products are intended to clear away messy build-up, unwanted oils, hair products, chemicals or residues left over after everything from sweaty afternoons to a long swim in a chlorinated pool. By clarifying, you can cleanse away these nasties and start the season with a fresh palette.
Try:
Maxi Wash by Kevin Murphy:
A strong Detoxifying shampoo that promises to purify, clean and clear.
K-PAK by Joico
This deeply detoxifying shampoo gently yet effectively removes dulling buildup and impurities.
RENEW CLARIFYING SHAMPOO by AG
Remove product build up, chlorine and damaging mineral deposits with this gentle, colour-safe revitalizing shampoo. Ideal for swimmers.
Condition
Conditioning your hair effectively means replenishing moisture and restoring strength from roots to ends. Selecting products that can offer hydration without residue is key to achieving luscious pre-summer locks.
Try:
HYDRATE.ME.MASQUE by KEVIN.MURPHY
A repairing and smoothing treatment, this mask delivers hydration and moisture to dry hair or hair exposed to harsh, dry climates.
Nutritious superfoods restore dryness and brittleness, resulting in shinier, more luxurious hair.
Leave in Molecular Hair Mask by K18
This is a leave-in treatment mask for all hair types that clinically reverses damage and restores strength, softness, smoothness, and bounce to hair.
Cut
A good haircut can go a long way. Damaged, broken or split ends need to be removed regularly to achieve truly manageable hair. But after a long and super hot summer, the damage is generally more extensive than any other time of year. Frequent sun exposure, swimming and the inevitable daily updos to cool off mean you need a cut sooner rather than later.
Visit us at Manzer to find out how we can help restore your hair for fall.
Chemical treatments and heat styling not only damage your hair but also damage your curl pattern. Over time, excessive styling can alter the texture of your hair, causing it to become limper, less defined and dry.
Not sure whether your hair is curly? Wet it and wait. If your hair forms loose waves or curls when wet, it should curl when dry with a bit of help. Here are four simple steps towards re-discovering the curl in your hair.
Looking for the best products to restore those curls? We have you covered. Here are our favourite curl enhancers.
AG Hair Curl Thrive Conditioner
Protein additives for hair, like Olaplex, are kind of like the protein powder you might toss into your morning smoothie. Just as protein added to your smoothie is meant to fill in the gaps of your less-than-nutritious diet, a protein filler hair treatment works the same way. Colouring your hair regularly can cause some serious damage. Long-term, excessive bleaching can leave your hair porous. This means that the next time you go for a colour, the molecules of the dye don’t stick. As a result, the colour tends to bleed out, fade quickly and never fully provide you with the gorgeous hue you have been hoping for.
That is where protein additives or fillers come in. These hair care fillers fill in super porous or damaged hair by attaching proteins to the hair cuticle. This repairs the hair, patching it and creating a strong outer layer so that colour can work as intended. It also helps to prevent further damage. But there is no one size fits all treatment. Like any beauty product, hair type and hair colour define which protein filler is best for you.
Olaplex is likely the most well-known hair perfector. It tends to be the product clients ask about, but it isn’t the only protein additive out there. It is far from a one size fits all situation, which means that stylists should be offering protein additives based on your hair type, hair colour and style. Every stylist will have their go-to products but choosing a particular product for your unique hair type is dependent on a number of factors. Here are some of our favourites:
Olaplex
Olaplex is made with their Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate ingredient which has allowed vastly improved colour and care results. Olaplex restores damaged hair by repairing it from the inside out offering healthy, beautiful, shiny, touchable hair.
Olaplex is a sort of hair-life insurance. This product is used to push the boundaries of just how drastically hair can be lightened. It can help prevent damage and restores the hair protein. But major breakage and damage cannot be magically repaired so cautious colouring is still super important to avoid breakage.
Joico Defy Damage
Joico has its own protein additive line which protects hair from the effects of daily heat styling, UV exposure, and environmental pollution. This hair care system defies damage and strengthens hair bonds for instantly refreshed, renewed and visibly healthier hair. Feel.
Joico allows the hair to remain strong and aids in achieving brighter locks more quickly when lightening it. It is a versatile product for nearly all hair types.
K18
This product is named K18 after the unique patented K18 Peptide. The brand developed this product to reach the innermost layers of hair, treating the core polypeptide chains. The product is just right to reconnect broken chains, repair, hydrate and rejuvenate damaged, broken hair.
K18 is an incredible product for already fragile hair. It effectively strengthens the hair and is used either before treatment or brought home as a leave-in treatment for more regular use. It can make unruly hair feel silky smooth.
We offer a range of take-home treatments which offer a preventative and long-term solution for healthier hair.
AG Nourish Mask - for mega moisture
KM Hydrate Me Masque - Hydration
KM Angel Masque - For protein restoration
KM young Again Masque - For dry brittle long hair

It’s important to note that dry shampoo doesn’t cleanse your hair. It works by absorbing excess oil and helping to make your hair appear more full, and fluffy, plus it usually smells divine. The idea of refreshed hair without hours of washing and drying is appealing but the results can vary and it’s important to use high-quality dry shampoos. Discover why, which products are best and how to use them.
The Good:
High-quality, non-aerosol dry shampoos are great at sucking up that oil and giving the bounce you are looking for without over-washing or spending ages styling. Used once or twice a week, good-quality dry shampoos offer all the benefits without the risks. Plus, natural fragrance can have you smelling and feeling perfectly refreshed. Here is what to look for:
The Bad:
Like any product, overuse is not ideal. When dry shampoo is overused you can do some pretty serious harm to your scalp and its microbiome. Buildup of any styling product can clog the pores on your scalp, but one that is specifically intended to absorb oils can be especially harmful with overuse. There is also a range of not-so-friendly ingredients in lower-quality dry shampoos. Talcum powder, along with other known carcinogens, is still occasionally used by commercial hair products. Here is what to avoid:
The Best Way to Use It:
Once you have found your holy grail of dry shampoo, feel free to use it twice a week. We love Kevin Murphy’s Fresh.Hair Dry shampoo as it checks all of our hair, health and environment-loving boxes. Simply shake well, and spray lightly over dry hair before rubbing it into the hair or brushing it through.
Looking for some extra hydration without a complete conditioning treatment? Try Kevin Murphy’s Young.Again Dry Conditioner for the ultimate moisture without re-styling.

Solid Colour
If you have a full head of solid colour, you know the intense and not-so-appealing look of roots growing in. It gives you a full perspective of just how quickly your hair seems to grow. Solid colour requires upkeep every six weeks to ensure that you are looking your best.
Highlights
Highlights give you a lot more leeway. If you enjoy shifting the tone of your hair slightly according to the seasons, this is a great way to follow trends or add warmth or coolness depending on the season. Highlights should be refreshed every 12 weeks or once a season. So if you have highlighted hair, consider booking your next hair colouring appointment to freshen those locks for the next shift in weather.
Balayage
Balayage is the ultimate low-maintenance hair colour option, needing touch-ups just a couple of times a year. Depending on how much light you want around the face, you can also opt to add a few highlights each season as part of your maintenance routine.
Fashion Colours
Fashion colours require the most work as they fade in as little as eight to 12 shampoos. So depending on how often you are washing your hair, you may find yourself visiting the salon more often than with other hair dye techniques. An amazing purple, dazzling pink or dreamy blue won’t stay vibrant without regular love so be sure to plan for a bi-weekly or monthly visit to stay fresh.
Toned Hair
If you have grey or white blonde hair that is toned for ultimate vibrancy and lack of copper tones you will need to pop into the salon for a toner touch-up every four to five weeks. This also depends on how often you wash your hair but a good rule of thumb is to assume that you’ll need monthly visits to ensure that your keep the exact colour you love.
How long your colour lasts also has a great deal to do with the products you choose to use in your hair. Normal shampoos and conditioners will strip the colour more quickly than products specifically intended for colour-treated hair. Check out some of our fave hair products to sustain your gorgeous coloured locks.

Yep, the condition of the water from your shower could be the culprit when it comes to healthy hair. None of those amazing shampoos or treatments will work if the water you are using to wash your hair is too hard or too soft. What to do about it? Here is everything you need to know about getting the best water for those locks.
What is Hard Water?
In Toronto, we have moderately hard water. Hard water has high amounts of minerals like magnesium and calcium. You know you have hard water if you notice white deposits on taps, faucets and shower crevices. This means that these mineral deposits will also end up on your hair.
The mineral buildup on your hair and scalp can cause weighed-down, lifeless, dry hair. Hair can also become more frizzy and prone to breakage. These minerals tend to strip the hair of colour which means it gets faded well before you are due for your next colour. Long term, your hair tends to become less manageable and more resistant to styling and colouring.
What is soft water?
Soft water is the total opposite of hard water. This type of water has a low concentration of magnesium and calcium and a high concentration of sodium. This type of water can feel almost slimy.
It is also a not-so-awesome type of water to have when it comes to clean, manageable hair. The lack of minerals in soft water means that shampoo and other products don't fully wash away. Your hair and skin can feel oily and removing products can be challenging which leads to limp, lifeless hair.
What is the solution?
Whether you are using a well or the city’s water or heading up north for a summer of lake water showers, you can solve the damage to your hair and skin with a few simple solutions.
Water Filter
Purchasing a water filter for your shower is an easy way to get the best possible water quality for your hair without breaking the bank. There are a wide range of filters available on the market and a few simple things to look for. You want to make sure that the filter has a good flow rate (meaning that enough water passes through and is cleaned quickly) of around 2.0 gallons per minute. You also want to make sure that it is a multi-layer filter that uses carbon. These are the most effective in removing chlorine, sediment and other unpleasant compounds.

]]>You have probably seen a variety of different masks. Disposable, fabric, surgical, N95, nylon, triple-layer, filtered. The list goes on and on. This is our how-to guide on choosing masks that work for you, your family and your unique needs.
Fabric
Fabric face masks come in a variety of styles and layer options. These environmentally friendly masks are great for outdoors or layering over a surgical mask for extra protection. They feel good against the skin and come in lots of fashionable colours and patterns. Make sure you look for triple-layer masks and opt for cotton for the best fit and comfort. Washing these masks after every wear is important to their efficacy and keeping your distance from others—especially those not wearing masks—is key. Cloth masks are great at protecting others from you but aren’t 100 per cent effective at ensuring your safety.
Surgical
Surgical masks are disposable protective masks that you can find (nearly) everywhere. A well-fitting, high-quality surgical mask is effective at filtering respiratory droplets that spread disease. These masks come in three levels of protection, three being the strongest and most effective for preventing COVID-19. Surgical masks have at least three layers of protection and work best when the mask fits snugly on the face. You may need to tie the ear loops to achieve a perfect fit.
At Manzer, we sell surgical masks of every level and we use level 2 and level 3 masks in the salon because they are cost-effective, comfortable and they fit well.
N95, KN95 and KF94
N95, KF94 and KN95 masks offer the ultimate protection. These respirator-style masks have four or five layers and the KN95 and N95 masks filter out at least 95 per cent of the tiniest (0.3 microns) airborne particles. KF94 masks filter out 94 per cent.
N95 masks meet American standards, KN95 are the Chinese standard equivalent and KF94 are from Korea. KF stands for “Korean filter”. The most important part of making the most of your respirator mask is making sure it fits well. If there are gaps between your mask and your skin, you’re not getting the benefit of your mask’s extra protection.
Different masks for different tasks
Choosing the right mask for you depends on your job, your lifestyle and where you might find yourself on a given day. Public transportation and medical environments, or places where you are very close to others for extended periods warrant a KN95. For outdoor interactions or layering, a fabric or surgical mask might be the best and most comfortable option for you. Need help getting the perfect fit? You can use surgical tape around the perimeter of your mask to stick it to your skin and seal up any gaps.

]]>Ceramic
Ceramic is a clay composite. Unlike your grandmother’s teacups, this clay-composite material is used because it allows for even heat distribution and smoothing features. In the case of flat irons, It may heat up a little slower than its titanium counterparts but the benefit is that its infrared capability heats the hair from the inside out. This helps retain moisture and reduces the risk of burning. When it comes to blow dryers, the heating element in the dryer is coated in ceramic which helps to keep your hair protected. As a result, ceramic styling tools are ideal for those with fine, fragile or colour-treated hair.
Titanium
Titanium is lightweight, fast heating, durable and offers consistent heat throughout the flat iron or curling iron. Unlike ceramic styling tools, titanium heats the hair from the outside. Because of this feature, these tools tend to be fantastic for very coarse and naturally curly hair. While speed and long-lasting durability may be big benefits, titanium styling tools don’t offer the same level of moisture retention as the ceramic alternative.
Ionic
Ionic refers to the way the material affects the particles in your hair. Yes, it is about molecular technology. Essentially, ionic technology creates negatively charged ions which help to decrease frizz by battling the watery positively charged ions. Both ceramic and titanium flat irons can have ionic technology to help smooth hair, reducing any leftover moisture. With hairdryers, ionic technology can significantly reduce drying time even at a lower temperature. The big benefit here? If you have curly hair, you can use low heat, reduce frizz, keep your tendrils tight and not spend hours under the blow dryer. If you have thin, fine or heavily colour-treated hair, however, you’ll want to steer away from ionic hair dryers as they can over-dry your hair very quickly potentially leading to damage.
Tourmaline
Tourmaline is a version of ionic. Tourmaline itself is a semi-precious mineral that creates way more charged ions than your standard ionic styling tool. From hair dryers to flat and curling irons, tourmaline is an option that steps up the impact of the technology. So if you have super frizzy or hard to manage hair, this can be a huge advantage. Just be wary of the intensity of the heat as it can seriously dry out those locks.
Finding the perfect styling tools means being mindful of the unique hair type it will be used on and keeping in mind the level of heat you think you need. A skilled hand will do super well with the high-speed heating of a titanium flat iron but for those seeking a more gentle and moisture-friendly option, ceramic might be the right choice for you.
Here are some of our favourite heat styling tools:
Cutting hair regularly keeps your hair hydrated, happy and it ensures that split ends don’t get out of hand. Generally speaking, a cut every 6-8 weeks is a good place to start but you may be surprised to learn that your specific hair may need more or less time between the chop. Depending on your style, colour and type, you may need to visit the salon more often or you may have the luxury of waiting a little longer between visits.
LENGTH
If you have bangs or short hair, it is no surprise that you need to be at the salon more frequently. Keeping your style looking perfectly coiffed takes a little more work and more frequent haircuts. Short hair and those with bangs should have their haircut every 2-4 weeks. Those with medium-length hair can get away with waiting 6-8 weeks and those with long hair and layers can go as long as three months between cuts.
TEXTURE
Length of your hair is not the only determining factor. After all thick, coarse hair is a lot more durable than thin hair which requires more regular cutting to ensure that is does not get exceedingly damaged. The thicker your hair, the more likely you are to be able to wait between cuts, especially if you have long, relatively straight and thick, course texture. If you have thin hair, the risk of damage is so much greater and thus, regular cuts to maintain body and health is key.
What about curls? We know that curls take a lot longer to appear longer. Those ringlets can feel like they are growing at a snail’s pace. As a result, those with curls may want to hold back a little before booking haircuts too regularly.
COLOUR & STYLE
Do you colour your hair or use heat to style it regularly? Every time we colour our hair we are, inevitably causing a bit of damage. Chemical processes can be incredibly drying causing split ends to appear far more rapidly. Flat irons, curlings irons and hair blowers are also going to increase the amount of damage your hair receives. So if you are doing the damage, it does need to be undone by booking a salon visit every 6 weeks.
Keeping your hair healthy between salon visits is relatively easy. There are plenty of products which encourage moisture, control damage and frizz and reduce breakage. These are our favourite products.
Restore is the ultimate renewing, repairing and restoring treatment.

The Regimen includes:
]]>Flat Iron Curls
Curling hair with a flat iron seems like an oxymoron. Most of us have seen it done, or have had a stylist do it for, but it's not as complicated as it looks! This technique is surprisingly simple and takes just a bit of practice and technique to get it right. Instead of using your flat iron like a curling iron, think of it as curling a ribbon with a pair of scissors. Wrapping your hair around the flat edge and pulling actually creates a soft curl.
Curling Iron
Use a traditional curling iron for more robust curls and a classic curly look.
Start with clean and dry hair and choose a curling iron according to how tight you want your curls. The thicker the iron, the larger the ringlets, the smaller, the tighter the curls.
If you are looking for a simple updo that is classic and stylish and easy, a curly ponytail is the look for you. You can toss those pre-curled locks into a ponytail, or rather than spending a ton of time curling from roots to tips, try putting up your hair first and then using the same steps as above, to curl only the hair in your ponytail.
Highlights and lowlights are a traditional colour technique that will allow you to get a dynamic change with a natural look. These techniques offer dimensional hair colour by going either a few shades darker (low lights) or lighter (highlights) to suit your skin tone and desired look.
Both highlights and lowlights are achieved by colouring small, strategically chosen strands of hair. Foil is often used to keep each section from dyeing the hair beneath each highlight.
Regular maintenance is a must with highlights. As the colour grows out, your roots will show.
These sound like totally different techniques but the truth is, ombre and balayage are very similar and both use the same "painting" technique to subtly saturate areas of your hair with dye. This technique of applying hair colour by painting it or gently sweeping colour across the hair is called "balayage". If you get balayage you get the standard painting technique across your entire hair whereas an ombre look would be using the balayage technique to create a fade from dark roots to light tips.
The benefit of the balayage technique (used in both ombre and balayage) is that it creates longevity as the subtle colour application grows out more naturally. It can be free-hand painted or done with foils. Every stylist has their own technique that works the best for them. When we talk about balayage as a style, it means a soft, sun-kissed look that alters the colour of the hair. With ombre, the gradient of colour goes from dark roots to light tips. This is especially great for those who seek longevity. Busy moms and even pregnant mamas who don't want dye anywhere near their scalp can benefit from this look.
Have you heard of curlyage? Balayage is fairly simple to apply to straight and wavy hair types, but when it comes to curls, you want the colour to be applied more specifically to show off the texture. Curlayage is the same technique as balayage with specific care taken to highlight your natural waves. The outcome is a dynamic and personalized look that fits your curls perfectly.

Permanent hair dye, semi-permanent, demi-permanent or temporary hair colour. Which one should you use? And what's the difference?
Choosing the right kind of hair colour isn't just a decision you make for at-home box dye. An expert colourist can help you understand why you'd choose each type of colour and help you choose the best one for your hair. Plus, they'll have access to professional products and know exactly how to customize, mix and apply the colour so you get the best results.
There are a surprising number of factors to consider when choosing the best hair dye to use on your locks. These include:
There are four types of hair colour. Each has specific characteristics that will impact your whether you go blonde, brunette or bright pink.
What is the difference between demi and semi?
Semi-permanent colour does not usually contain any peroxide, developer or ammonia. It doesn't penetrate the hair but stays on the surface. It lasts between 15 and 30 shampoos.
Demi-permanent colour only offers you the opportunity to use the same depth or darkness of colour or go darker but it penetrates the hair more deeply so is good for blending or covering greys, for instance. It has slightly more staying power but also washes out within about 30 shampoos.
No matter the hair dye you choose, taking care of that colour is key. Try these products to keep your colour looking rich and vibrant.

]]>When you're waiting for your hair to grow it seems to take forever, but when you've had your hair coloured it seems like your roots start showing within days. While there's obviously no scientific reason for this beyond unrealistic expectations, the truth is that hair growth simply isn't straightforward.
Hair growth isn’t linear. Hormone changes, different phases of life and even nutrition can affect the growth and health of our hair. As you probably know from looking at your hairbrush, we continually lose hair which slowly grows back. This is called the hair growth cycle.
How fast does hair grow? Read on to learn exactly how and when hair grows and discover the best products to give you thick, fuller-looking locks.
The hair growth cycle is made up of three phases.
The first phase is the Anagen phase, the growing stage. This phase lasts between two and seven years. At a rate of half an inch each month, you could end up with 3.5 feet of hair in less than a decade. At this very moment around 85% of the hairs on your head are in this phase.
The Catagen phase is the transitional phase. This phase is about a week long and this is when the hair follicle renews itself. About 1% of the hair on your head is in this phase but it is an incredibly vital step in the process. This is when new growth occurs.
Finally, the Telogen phase, or resting stage lasts three months. Approximately 15% of the hair on your head is in this phase. This phase lasts about three months, during which the hair naturally falls from the scalp.
The cycle is usually straightforward. After the Telogen phase, the Anagen phase begins again. The new hair, which has been formed in the hair shaft, pushes the old hair from the scalp, if it hasn’t already been removed by combing, brushing, shampooing, etc.
If you have had a baby you have likely experienced hair loss beyond what's normal—and no, not from pulling it out! Telogen Effluvium is the name for postpartum hair loss.
During pregnancy, the hormones prolactin, estrogen and progesterone hormone cause all of your hair to shift into the anagen phase and essentially stop the telogen phase. This is why your hair is voluminous during pregnancy: 99% of your hair is in a phase of growth. Once your hormone levels normalize postpartum, your hair shifts back into its normal growth cycle, but before that can happen a LOT of shedding — a prolonged and excessive catagen stage — must occur.
Most of us strive for thick, voluminous locks. Unfortunately, genetics has a great deal to do with how thick our hair is and whether we experience hair loss. The most common type of hair loss is called Androgenic Alopecia (ANA). This type of hair loss affects up to 70% of men and 40% of women.
And while it's common, it's not very well understood. There are lots of myths when it comes to ANA. Let's set the record straight:
Manzer has a range of products that can increase volume, reducing the appearance of hair loss. They can also improve the overall health of your hair and scalp.
